This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Sarah Odom
The estate folder begins at image 1103. There are 20 images within the estate folder. (images 1103-1122)1

Sarah Ann Freeman Odom, wife of John D. Odom, was a daughter of Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis. John and Sarah Ann married about 1856 and had two known children; a son and a daughter.
The Probate file states that Sarah Ann Odom died on June 25, 1882. This is in conflict with a “Bill of Complaint” which states that Sarah Ann died on June 21, 1882. Her tombstone at Bay Springs Baptist Church cemetery only has her years of death (1882) engraved upon the monument.

The petition of John D. Odom respectfully shows to this court
1. That Sarah A. Odom died intestate on or about the 25th day of June 1882 leaving a small estate in the County and state aforesaid and letters of administration thereon are necessary to be granted in order to settle said Estate.
2. That your petitioner was the husband of the intestate and as such the first entitled to administration. Wherefore your petitioner prays Letters of Administration upon said Estate and for such other relief as may be necessary.

John D. Odom was granted Letters of Administration for management of the estate on 25 January 1883.2
In February 1863, Mary Eliza Davis, a newborn daughter, was born to Carroll Washington Davis and Mary B. Boatwright. Mary Boatwright, the mother, died from complication during the birth of Mary Eliza Davis. Sarah Ann Freeman Odom cared for Mary Eliza Davis, the newborn daughter of Carroll Washington Davis from the 6th day of March 1863 until the 1st day of March 1865.3
Sarah Ann Freeman Odom is my 1st cousin 4 times removed.
