Mystery Monday~Revisited - Did Tobias A. Honeycutt Die in the Civil War?
Tobias A. Huneycutt is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle. He is the second born son of Marcus I. Huneycutt and his wife Charity Dry.
Back on 2 November 2015 I wrote an article entitled “Did Tobias A. Honeycutt Die in the Civil War?” You can read it here:
http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2015/11/mystery-mondaydid-tobias-honeycutt-die.html
The purpose of this post is to revisit this question, answer it and provide additional information.
The short answer is – No, Tobias A. Huneycutt DID NOT Die in the Civil War.
But, a Tobias Honeycutt of Rowan County, North Carolina DID DIE in the Civil war.
Tobias A. Huneycutt
Tobias A. Huneycutt, b. about 1824 married Elizabeth Miriam 'Mary Ann" Honeycutt on 7 Nov 1852 in Stanly County, NC. He was the son of Mark Huneycutt and Charity Dry; she was a daughter of Andrew Jackson Huneycutt, Sr. and Mary Ann 'Polly" Crayton.1
No war record has been found for any other Tobias Honeycutt that served during the Civil War. Therefore, if he did serve, his presence in the 1870 census for Mecklenburg County, North Carolina is proof that Tobias A. Huneycutt survived the war.2
1870 CENSUS: Charlotte City Ward 2, Mecklenburg, North Carolina; Roll: M593_1148; Image: 149; Family History Library Film: 552647, Page: 73A (stamped); Line 32, Dwelling 112, Family 113; Tobias HUNECUTT, male, age 46, born in NC; Elizabeth HUNECUTT, Wife, age 28, born in NC; Rufus HUNECUTT, Son, age 20, born in NC; Jackson HUNECUTT, Son, age 17, born in NC; Mary HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 15, born in NC; Sarah HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 13, born in NC; Susan HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 10, born in NC; Maggie HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 8, born in NC and Tobitha HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 1, born in NC.

Tobias Honeycutt
This Tobias Honeycutt, b. about 1827 married Esther Clementine Weant on 15 Mar 1848, Rowan, North Carolina. The parents of this Tobias Honeycutt are not known. 3
Tobias Honeycutt husband of Esther Clementine Weant DID DIE in the Civil War.
First, we have the 1880 census where E. C. Honeycutt, age 53, is listed as a widower. 4
Second, from the Book Series “NC Troops 1961-1865, A Roster”, we find this entry. 5
