Anson County Military Veteran~James Deese

James Deese, born 5 March 1920, was the oldest and first born son of John Lucian Deese and Lela Aileen Purvis. 1

The attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 resulted in the United States declaring War on Japan and entering the war on both fronts – the Pacific and European theaters.
On 1 October 1943, James Deese, age 23 1/2 joined the US Army and trained at Camp Wheeler, before shipping out in March 1944 to the European Theater. During the Normandy Campaign he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. 2 3

James Deese is one of 39 men from Anson County who sacrificed everything  to support and defend the United States. James was Killed in Action (KIA), in France, on 27 August 1944. His body was returned home and he was buried in the Morven cemetery. 4
