Hezekiah ‘Hugh’ Brock was taken prisoner while his wife and children watched him being taken away from their farm home in Chesterfield, SC. Hugh & Sallie's oldest (Benjamin Franklin), my g-grandfather had just turned 14 and the youngest (Pleasant Elmore wasn't quite 12 months old. Hugh never saw his family again. After being taken prisoner he was transferred to the Confederate Prison at Point Lookout, Maryland. On 12 June 1865, exactly 3 months to the day of his imprisonment Hugh passed away at Point Lookout. Cause of death was listed as inflammation of the lungs which probably translates to pneumonia.
There is a Descendants of Point Lookout, POW Organization, for anyone who may be interested. Many soldiers from Chesterfield were incarcerated at this prison including many of my Sellers relatives. In the late 1990’s before moving back to North Carolina I belonged to this organization and submitted paperwork and documents to have Hezekiah Brock named added to the Confederate Memorial. The Park Director, Pearl Buck, failed to make good on her commitment to me and the PLPOW organization and never added Hezekiah name to a plague on this memorial. I checked when I was there in May 2004. 1
However, as posted on Hezekiah’s FindAGrave Memorial (# 25572002) they did create a list and add his name (“Name is not listed on monument but appears on a list from Baltimore National Cemetery updated May 25, 2006 located at the monument. - FAG#25572002) 2
Hezekiah Brock died at Point Lookout on 12 June 1865. The War that resulted in the loss of his life ended 63 days earlier on 9 April 1865. 3 4
