Thomas Davis
Birth: 1748
Death: 1844
THESE DATES ARE WRONG
On the FindAGrave memorial for Thomas Davis, my 4th Great Grandfather, is a note stating “According to Charlie Purvis the dates are wrong on the stone. The correct dates are born March 26, 1760 and died March 20, 1845.
The dates on the tombstone are wrong, not according to my statement “that they are wrong”. The dates are wrong because period documents DO NOT substantiate these dates but does provide birth, marriage and death dates for Thomas and his wife Nancy Rivers.
BIRTH: Thomas Davis was born 26 March 1760 in the Chesterfield district.

John Calvin Davis Family Bible
Thomas Davis died March the 20th 1845, aged 85 years (exact)
Nancy Davis died December 15th 1853, age 86 years (exact)
John C. Davis Bible Entries for Thomas & Nancy |
The comments “exact” in the Family Bible suggest that both Thomas and Nancy died on their birth day. If Thomas was exactly 85 on March 20, 1845 then his birth date would calculate to be 20 March 1760; which is his reported birthday.
Conversely, If Nancy Rivers was exactly 86 on December 15, 1853 then her birth date would calculate to be 15 December 1767.
Nancy Rivers Davis
b. 15 Dec. 1767 (Calculated).
d. 15 Dec. 1853 (Recorded).
One other piece of significant data related to this families is the birth record of Malachi Rivers, son of William and Betsey Rivers.
