It’s Family Time~The Jeremiah‭ & ‬Phoebe‭ (‬Sellers‭) ‬Gulledge Family

Jeremiah Gulledge,‭ ‬borne about‭ ‬1796,‭ ‬was the son of the Rev.‭ ‬Joel Gulledge and his wife Zilpha Huntley.‭ ‬His father was an pioneer Baptist Minister associated with The Moriah Association.‭ ‬Jeremiah was their first born son.‭ ‬The Rev.‭ ‬Joel and Zilpha had eleven‭ (‬11‭) ‬children‭; ‬5‭ ‬daughters and‭ ‬6‭ ‬sons.‭

Jeremiah Gulledge married Phoebe Sellers about the year‭ ‬1816. ‭ ‬Phoebe Sellers,‭ ‬born about‭ ‬1787,‭ ‬was a daughter of Hardy Sellers and Mary Cook of Chesterfield County,‭ ‬South Carolina. ‭ ‬Jeremiah and Phoebe made their home in Anson County and raised a family of eight consisting of‭ ‬4‭ ‬daughters and‭ ‬4‭ ‬sons.‭ ‬At the time of Jeremiah death he owned a large tract of land that was divided among his‭ ‬8‭ ‬children all named within the land deed.‭ ‬Each child received‭ ‬71‭ ‬1/2‭ ‬acres plus in some cases money to make the estate equally balanced for each heir-at-law.‭ ‬The LAND DEED,‭ ‬Division of the Lands of Jeremiah Gulledge can be found in Deed Book‭ ‬14,‭ ‬pages‭ ‬273-275,‭ ‬Register of Deeds,‭ ‬Wadesboro,‭ ‬Anson County,‭ ‬North Carolina,  ‭

Phoebe‭ (‬Sellers‭) ‬Gulledge died almost‭ ‬10‭ ‬years before the passing of Jeremiah.‭ ‬Her exact death date is unknown.‭ ‬She most probably died due to child birth at the time that Harriet Elizabeth was born.‭ ‬She was ‬alive on‭ ‬8‭ ‬August‭ ‬1833‭ ‬and died before‭ ‬14‭ ‬Jul‭ ‬1834.‭ ‬The first date is the day her daughter Harriet Elizabeth Gulledge was born‭ (‬8‭ ‬August‭ ‬1833‭); ‬the second date is the day Hardy Sellers wrote his Last Will‭ & ‬Testament‭ (‬14‭ ‬July‭ ‬1834‭) ‬and on that date he stated,‭ ‬in his Will,‭ ‬that his daughter Phoebe was deceased and left‭ ‬3‭ ‬surviving children. ‭

6. ‭ ‬To the three children of my deceased daughter Phoebe Gulledge viz:‭ ‬Elisha Gulledge,‭ ‬James Gulledge,‭ ‬Phoebe Gulledge,‭ ‬I give to each three hundred dollars to bare interest from my death until they arrive to twenty-one years of each which sum is to be a full share of my estate both real and personal to the three last children named.

After the death of Phoebe‭ (‬Sellers‭) ‬Gulledge in‭ ‬1833/1834‭ ‬Jeremiah had two additional children,‭ ‬Jeremiah Gulledge,‭ ‬born‭ ‬1837‭ ‬and Sarah Ann Gulledge borne‭ ‬1838.‭ ‬The Mother of these two children are unknown.    ‭

Jeremiah Gulledge died on‭ ‬14‭ ‬April‭ ‬1853. ‭

Jeremiah Gulledge and Phoebe Sellers had the following children:

i.‭ ‬James Ratliff‭ "‬Wooly Jim‭" ‬Gulledge,‭ ‬born‭ ‬1‭ ‬May‭ ‬1817‭; ‬died‭ ‬24‭ ‬Mar‭ ‬1901,‭ ‬Anson County,‭ ‬North Carolina.

ii.‭ ‬Elisha Gulledge was born on‭ ‬2‭ ‬Nov‭ ‬1818.‭ ‬He died on‭ ‬10‭ ‬Dec‭ ‬1886‭ ‬at the age of‭ ‬68‭ ‬in Gulledge Township,‭ ‬Anson,‭ ‬North Carolina.‭ ‬Married Elizabeth Webb

iii.‭ ‬Phoebe Gulledge,‭ ‬born abt‭ ‬1825‭; ‬married William J.‭ ‬Griggs,‭ ‬abt‭ ‬1844‭; ‬died‭ ‬20‭ ‬Jan‭ ‬1892,‭ ‬Anson County,‭ ‬North Carolina.

iv.‭ ‬Zilpha Gulledge,‭ ‬born abt‭ ‬1830‭; ‬married Reuben Phillips,‭ ‬abt‭ ‬1855‭; ‬died‭ ‬1863.

v.‭ ‬Harriet Elizabeth Gulledge,‭ ‬born‭ ‬8‭ ‬Aug‭ ‬1833,‭ ‬Anson County,‭ ‬North Carolina‭; ‬married William C.‭ ‬Porter‭; ‬died‭ ‬22‭ ‬Apr‭ ‬1914,‭ ‬Anson County,‭ ‬North Carolina.

vi.‭ ‬Thomas Charles Gulledge,‭ ‬born‭ ‬2‭ ‬Apr‭ ‬1834,‭ ‬Chesterfield County,‭ ‬South Carolina‭; ‬married Sarah H.‭; ‬died Apr‭ ‬1900.

It’s Family Time~End of a Line~The Two Sons of Alsey Brock

Last Saturday’s “Family Time” blog post provided insight into the family's of Alsey and Lucy (Morris) Brock and named their two sons and their wives.

 https://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2023/10/its-family-timethe-alsey-brock-family.html

Today, we will look at the family of the two sons, Pleasant A. and Charles A. Brock/

The Alsey Brock family was a close knit family.

Charles A. and  his younger brother, Pleasant A. Brock were business men doing business in Cheraw, South Carolina under the name Charles A Brock & Bro.  They owned several town lots in the area of Market Street and  Front Street. Among those owned were Lots 9, 10, 11, 12, 241, 242, 246, 280, 281. Charles also managed the Cheraw dispensary.

Pleasant A. Brock married Martha Eugenia Horne on 10 February 1869 in Wadesboro, North Carolina. Martha was born 3 March 1852 a daughter of William E. Horne and Sarah Hamilton of Wadesboro, North Carolina. There were no children borne to this union most probably due to the short time of marriage. Pleasant A. Brock passed away on 28 February 1873. He and Martha had been married 4 years 12 days. His death was due to Typhoid fever. His death date and cause was recorded in the Pleasant A. Brock's Bible in possession of a Mr.  Gandy, Society Hill, South Carolina.

His widow, Martha Eugenia (Horne) Brock married Thomas Ashton Gandy on 20 July 1875 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. This date is also included in the Family Bible. Martha Eugenia (Horne) Brock and Thomas Ashton Gandy had 4 children; 2 sons and 2 daughters.

In the settlement of Pleasant A. Brock estate, his widow, Martha Eugenia (Horne) (Brock) Gandy was deeded possession of Lots 9 & 10 in the Town of Cheraw, South Carolina.[DEED BOOK #4, Pages 767, 768 and 769]

M. E. Gandy to Lucy & C. A. Brock  Release

Brock were seized and possessed of various Town Lots in the Town of Cheraw in the State aforesaid, and whereas the said Pleasant A. Brock has departed this life, Intestate leaving as his Heirs at law his Widow Martha E. who has since intermarried with the said Thomas A. Gandy; his mother, Lucy Brock and his brother the said Charles A. Brock, and whereas the individual half interest, of the said Pleasant A. Brock in the said Lots has thereby become desirable amongst his said Heirs at Law and whereas it has been agreed by the sad Charles A. Brock, as Senior of the said Partnership and by the said Heirs at Law to divide the said Real estate, so as to set apart to the said Martha E in Severalty, her share therein, and whereas the said Martha E. has agreed to take, in full of her share therein the two Lots known as Numbers Nine (9) and Ten (10) and in consideration there to release to the said Lucy Brock and Charles A. Brock all her right, title, share and interest in the remaining Lots know as Numbers Eleven (11) Twelve (12) two hundred and forty six (246) two hundred and eighty (280) two hundred and eighty one (281)here after more particularly described .

Charles A. Brock married Sarah Jane, aka “Sallie" [Maiden name unknown] sometime before August 1866. We know from Chesterfield County, SC Deed (DB 1, page 15) posted in last weeks “Family Time” post that Charles A. Brock and Sarah Jane “Sallie [Last name Unknown] were married before execution of this deed on 4 August 1866.

Charles and Sarah had no children. However, Charles A. and Sarah took a very special interest in Mary Kizzie/Kerry Brock.

POWELL and 3 lots (Lot #156, 157 and 158) in the Town of Cheraw to be placed in trust. One was the lot where her son Pleasant A. BROCK resided at the time of his death (d. 28 Feb. 1873). W. T. To }                             Deed
Kizzie M. Bullard}
To all whom these Presents may come,
Greeting:
Whereas Lucy Brock late of the County of Chesterfield, State of South Carolina by her Deed bearing Date the 18th Day of March 1880 conveyed the property hereinafter Described to Wm. T. Powell, in trust, for the uses and trusts fully set forth reference being thereto have, will more fully appear.
And whereas the said Wm. T. Powell having died many years ago the Court by order, duly appointed A. G. Bright as Trustee to carry out the terms of the said trust Deed, and he has been acting as said trustee.
And whereas Charles A. Brock and Sarah J. Brock, the immediate beneficiaries and Cestui Que Trusts, in said Deed named have both died, leaving no child, or children, nor did the said Charles A. Brock leave any child, or children of any other wife.
And whereas Kizzie M. Brock who has since inter-married with one George S. Bullard) was named in said Deed as the sole beneficiary of Cestui Que Trust, after the death of said Charles A. Brock and Sarah J. Brock, should they leave no children, and should the said Charles A. Brock leave no child, or children by any other wife.
             And whereas the said Kizzie M. Brock has married the said George G. Bullard and has children living and has not forfeited her interest in the said trust, estate under the terms of the said Trust Deed;
Page 534

Deed Book 5, Page 782-785, Lucy BROCK to W. T. POWELL. Lucy puts all of her property in trust with W. T. POWELL to hold the same for the benefit of her children. She refers to the natural love for her son Charles A. BROCK and his wife Sarah J. BROCK and Mary Kerry BROCK the child of Irvin S. BROCK.

This deed (DB 5:782) clearly says Charles and his wife Sarah had no children and Mary Kerry/Kizzie was the child  of Irvin S. Brock. The problem is that there are 3 Irvin/Ervin Samuel Brock in Chesterfield County.

Deed Book 17, Page 533-536 says “And whereas Kizzie M.

Yesterday (13 OCT.) was a good day of research. I unexpectedly found a short death notice in Williamsburg County, South Carolina that told me exactly who the father of Mary/Kerry/Kizzie Brock (Mrs. George T. Ballad) and when he died.

Obituary:

Mr. Irvin S. Brock, of Cheraw, the father-in-law of Mr. Geo. T Bullard, of this place, died at his home last Tuesday.

The County Record. [volume]
(Kingstree, S.C.) 1885-1975,
October 14, 1897, Image 1, page 1, column 4

Among the 3 Irvin S. Brock, the Irvin that died in 1897 was Irvin Samuel Brock, born about 1855, died 12 October 1897, son of Stephen Brock and Nancy Smith. Irvin Samuel married Mary A Stubbs before 1878. Irvin Samuel and Mary A. Stubbs had 6 known children; 4 daughters and two sons. But until yesterday no one knew which Irvin Samuel Brock was the father of   Mary Kizzie Brock.

Is Mary Kizzie/Kerry the daughter of Mary A. (Stubbs) Brock? I don’t know. Without a definite marriage date I cannot say that Mary A. (Stubb) Brock is her Mother. In 1880, Mary was found in the household of Charles A. and Sarah Jane Brock not in her father’s Irvin Samuel Brock household. Charles A. and Irvin Samuel Brock are 1st Cousins.

Charles A. Brock had some rough times after passing of his brother, Pleasant A. Brock and in August 1878 filed for bankruptcy. (Deed 5, page 468, Filed for Bankruptcy)

On 23 September 1898, Charles A. Brock passed away at his place of business.

Obituary:

Cheraw, Sept. 24.—Mr. Charles A. Brock, the dispenser for the Cheraw dispensary, dropped dead at 11 o’clock today while in the discharge of his duties. The cause of his death is supposed to have been apoplexy. He was for many years a prominent merchant in this place. “The State”, (Columbia, SC) September 25, 1898, page 6, Col. 3.

Sarah Jane (Maiden name unknown) Brock passed away at the home of Mrs. George T. Bullard, aka Mary Kizzie/Kerry Brock on 21 October 1900.

Obituary:

Mrs. Brock, who has been living here with her son-in-law Mr. Geo. T. Bullard died Sunday night. Her remains were carried to Cheraw, S.C. yesterday for burial.

It’s Family Time~The Alsey Brock Family

Alsey Brock was born 10 September 1815, a son of Benjamin Brock and his wife Temperance. The surname of his Mother Temperance is unknown. There are many online trees that says her surname was GAY; but, this is just pure speculation.

Alsey was Benjamin and Temperance’ first born child. At the age of 20, or about 1835, Alsey Brock married Lucy Morris, age 13. Lucy’s parents are unproven but believed to be Wiley Morris and Charity Short.

Alsey and Lucy had two children. Alsey was a farmer and Lucy was a stay at home mom. Their children were two sons:

  1. Charles A. Brock, born 26 November 1836.
  2. Pleasant A. Brock, born 10 March 1839.

The Alsey Brock family seems to be doing well until about 1855. I believe that sometime before 1855, Alsey became sick and was unable to satisfactory care for his family. In 1855, there was a bill introduce to foreclose on a mortgage & Lucy Brock, wife of Alsey Brock, relinquishes her claim of dower. Another indication that Alsey lost the lawsuit.

Then on 13 March 1858, Alsey Brock passed away at the age of 42 leaving his widow Lucy, age 36 and two sons, Charles, age 22 and Pleasant, age 19.

Shortly after the loss of their dad, the South became embroiled in the War Between the States, the Civil War. Both Charles and Pleasant served during the duration of the war leaving their Mother back home to be care for by relatives. Thankfully, both Charles and Pleasant survived the war and returned home. Their Mother also survived the war.

Charles A. Brock married Sarah Jane, aka “Sallie" [Maiden name unknown] sometime before August 1866.

Alexander Brock Estate Lands Conveyed to Daughter, Elizabeth Brock

In today’s land deed we find brothers, David and [Ervin] Samuel, executing a land deed to transfer their 2/3 interest in the estate lands of their Father, Alexander Brock, to their sister, Elizabeth Brock.

This Land Deed came as a  complete surprise in that Alexander Brock died before 1880 and there were 6 children born to Alexander and Timmrah White. How did the three oldest children receive the property and why were the three youngest omitted? The Mother (Timmrah) had died about 1866.  Two of the other three children may have died young (not found in but 1 census) but son, Alexander was alive into the 1900’s and he should have been included in any estate settlement.

It’s Family Time~The George Winfield Baker Family

Mrs. George W. Baker of Rowan County, North Carolina was my 2nd Cousin 3

NOTE: The Tombstone for George has his middle name as William; but, Margaret (Sellers) Baker’s obituary shows his name to be Winfield as well as many other online records. The obituary also says they were married  on 19 November 1890.

Two Mark Honeycutt’s, One Land Deed, No Clues

Back in October 2015, I wrote a blog post about my paternal 3rd Great grandparents, Marcus and Charity (Dry) Huneycutt. In that post I made the following comments:

“What is NOT KNOWN is when, where and how both Mark and Charity passed away. I know it was before 1880. Marcus is not listed in the 1870 Census but Charity is; neither is listed in 1880 Census.”

https://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2015/10/its-family-timemarcus-mark-i-huneycutt.html

Very little progress has been made with this family since that time. I did learn that there is a 2nd Marcus Honeycutt's in Stanly County at the same time.  “Mark” Jackson Huneycutt, born 7 August 1825, a son of Ambrose M. Huneycutt and Elizabeth Morgan and my 3rd Great Grandfather, Marcus I. Huneycutt and his wife, Charity Dry.

During this on-going time I did find one additional land deed between John F. Furr to M.  Honeycut.

J. F. Furr to M. Honeycut Deed

State of North Carolina}
Cabarrus County}
This Deed made this 1st day of December 1881 by John F. Furr of Cabarrus County and State of North Carolina. Of the first part, to Mark Honeycut of Cabarrus County, and State aforesaid of the second part, Witnesseth; that the said John F. Furr in consideration of One Hundred and Forty Five Dollars, to him paid by said Honeycut, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, hath bargained and sold, and by these presents doth bargain, sell and convey to said Mark Honeycut and his heirs, all the right, title, interest and estate of the party of the first part in and to a tract of land in Cabarrus & Stanly Counties State of North Carolina adjoining the lands of Nathan Lambert, John M. Shue, John Starns and others, bounded as follows, viz:
          Beginning at a W. O. Shue’s Corner then S 48 ½ E 34 poles to a pine then S 57 E 111 ¾ ((then N 60 E 12 poles to a Hickory then W 18 E 29 poles & 6 links to a stake in Blackwelder’s line) inserted))
Poles to a Stake in the Branch Then N 67° W 19 poles 13 links to a Stone Blackwelders’s corner then N 28 E 52 poles 6 links to a Stone in the Cabarrus County line Widenhouse Corner thence N 86 W 65 poles to a B. O. (dead) then N 40 W 52 poles to a P.O. in John M. Shue’s line then S 10 W 44 ½ poles to a P. O. said Shue’s corner then S 80 W 40 poles to the beginning containing 50 Acres be the same more or less.
To Have and to Hold the aforesaid tract of land and all privileges and appurtenances thereto belonging, to the said Mark Honeycutt his heirs and assigns,to their only use and behoof forever.
And the said John F. Furr covenant that he is seized of said premises in fee and hath right to convey the same in fee-simple; that the same are free and clear from all encumbrances and that he will warrant and defend the said title to the same against the claims of all persons whatsoever.
In Testimony, Whereof the said John F. Furr hath hereunto set his Hand and seal, the day and year above written..
Attest:                                                                             John F. Furr (Seal)

The foregoing certificate of F. A. Klutz, a Justice of the Peace of Cabarrus County, is adjudged to be in due form and according to law. Therefore, let the same, with this certificate, be registered.

Rec’d and registered
December 28th 1883—
          Jno. K. Patterson
          Register of Deeds

In don't think this Land Deed has any connection to my Mark Huneycutt. I think both Marcus and Charity were deceased before 1880.

There is an 1816 Petition for Montgomery County in which a Mark Honeycutt and Mark Honeycutt, Jr. signed the petition for the Court House site. Only one Mark Honeycutt had been identified.

The 1870 and 1880 Census are the last provable connection that I can find for Marcus and Charity. His estate continued in Probate up till 1902.

If you have any information on this Couple please contact me through this blog.

Marcus and Charity Huneycutt are my 3rd Great Grandparents.
