James L. Brock, the husband of Elizabeth Purvis, passed away sometime before 17 June 1871. He was alive and well when the 1870 Census for Pike County, Mississippi was enumerated on 6 August 1870.

In a previous post related to the heirs of James Brock, we saw by means of a land deed that James Brock was deceased.

UPON reading the affidavit of complaint, and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Clerk that Eli Brock, Nancy Miller and T. G. Miller, her husband, Angeline Miller and R. L. Miller, her husband, Isham Hinson and Thomas Hinson, defendants in the above entitled cause, are non-resident of the State of Mississippi, and reside beyond the limits thereof, respectively as follows: said Eli Brock, Nancy Miller, T. G. Miller, Angeline Miller  and R. L. Miller, in Washington parish, State of Louisiana, and whom post office is at Palestine, in said parish and State; and said Isham Hinson in the parish of Livingston, in the State of Louisiana, and whom post office is at Amite City, in the parish of Tangipahoa, in the said State of Louisiana; and said Thomas Hinson in the county of Lafayette, in the State of Arkansas and who post office is at Bright Star, in the county of Hopkins, in the State of Texas; it is therefore ordered that said defendants enter their appearance herein on or before
The Third Monday, in July A. D. 1873.
at a term of said Chancery Court of Pike county, State of Mississippi, to be held at the Court House of said county of Pike, to answer, plead or demur to the complainant's bill, or the several allegations thereof will be taken for confessed as to them. 
It is further ordered that a copy of this order be published in the Magnolia Gazette a weekly newspaper published in said county of Pike, once a week for one month, and that said Clerk mail a copy of said order to each of the within named parties, at their respective post offices.

Trust Sale: The Dwelling House of V. W. Brock

Trust Sale.

BY virtue of a deed of trust heretofore executed to me as Trustee by V. W.  Brock and Moses Brock to secure the payment, of certain notes therein described, due to Thos. B. Rixby senior dec'd has been duly recorded in the office of the Clerk, of the Probate court of Hinds County --I will on Saturday, the 25th April 1840 before the door of the court house of Hinds county, Miss. sell for cash the following described property, to wit: a lot of ground in the town of Utica upon which is now erected the dwelling house of him the said V. W. Brock, containing one quarter of an acre; also, the south half of the south west quarter of section fourteen, and the south half of the west half of the north west quarter, of section twenty-three; also south half of the west half of the north east quarter, and north half of the east half of the north west quarter of section fifteen; also, the north half of the west half of the north west quarter of section fifteen; also, the north half of the west half of the north west quarter of section twenty-three; also, west half of the south west  quarter of section fifteen,  all situated in Township 3, Range 4 West; with all appurtenaces unto said land belonging or in any way appertaining to the said V. W. Brock.

The Reverend Valentine William Brock was born about 1806 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina a son of William Brock and his wife Charlotte [LNU]. 

William and Charlotte took their family to Louisiana and Mississippi before November 1826. In November 1826, their son Valentine was received by experience into membership with the Silver Creek Baptist Church, Pike County, Mississippi. 

Valentine married Vashti Brooks on 12 October 1835 in Claiborne County, Mississippi. To this union was born 7 children; two which died very young. After the death of his wife Vashti on 6 March 1851  Valentine married Martha Conger Sims on 16 March 1852.
Valentine William Brock served as a Baptist Minister during his lifetime.

V. W. Brock and Moses Brock are brothers. A death date for Valentine William Brock has not been found. He was last enumerated in the 1870 census for Clinton Township, Hinds County, Mississippi.

1852 Land Deed~Asahel Six and Wife Sarah to Moses Brock

This indenture made the twenty eight day of December on the year of our Lord, One thousand eight hundred and fifty two between Asahel Six and Sarah Six his wife of the one party and Moses Brock of the other part all of the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi. Witnesseth that the said Asahel Six and Sarah Six for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty seven dollars and fifty cents to them in hand paid by the said Moses Brock the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted, bargained and sold and by the presents do grant bargain quit convey deliver and confirm unto the said Moses Brock his heirs Executers, administrators & assigns forever all our portion Lot three divided interest claim or claims in and to the unsettled and undivided estate of William Brock late of Hinds county state of Mississippi, deceased. Especially all our interest in the Negro or mulatto man John belonging to said estate or the legal heirs of the same and all our interest in the money belonging to said estate amounting to three hundred and twenty dollars, more or less which is now in the hands of the said Moses Brock as the legal administrator of the said estate to have and to hold the interest of the said Asahel Six and Sarah Six his wife
in the estate aforesaid together with all profits and interest arising there from. In testimony whereof the said Asahel Six and Sarah does hereunto set their hands and affix their seals date first above written.

Asahel Six, son of Phillip Six and his wife Charlotte Selsor was born 1806 in Mississippi. On 22 November 1838 Asahel married Sarah Brock, age 18, daughter of William Brock and his 1st wife Charlotte [LNU]. Asahel and Sarah had six children; 3 sons and 3 daughters.

Moses Brock mentioned in the deed is the son of William and Charlotte thus he is also Sarah’s brother.

Sarah and Moses Brock are my 1st Cousin 5 times removed; their father William Brock is my 4th Great Grand Uncle.

William Townsend to Margaret Calvert, William Brock, Moses Brock, et al; fi fa on bond.
     By virtue of the above stated writ of fieri facias to me directed, from the honorable the circuit court of Hinds county, I will sell at public auction, to the highest bidder, for gold or silver.
     On the 1st Monday, 6t day of April next, within the hours prescribed by law, before the door of the court house of said county, in the town of Raymond, one negro girl slave, named Rebecca; which was levied upon us as the property of Margaret Calvet and Moses Brock.

Moses Brock, was born 8 Sept 1808, a son of William Brock and his wife Charlotte. Between 1817 and 1820, William and Charlotte moved their family from Chesterfield County, SC and migrated to Mississippi settling in what is now Hinds County, Mississippi.

On 15 February 1838, Moses A. Brock married Margaret Calvit. Margaret was the widow of John Calvit who passed away in January 1835. She was born Margaret Six, daughter of Phillip Six and Charlotte Selser.  This marriage was the second marriage for both Moses and Margaret with Moses previously married to Celia Goodwin, deceased.

Moses and Margaret had 7 children before her death in March 1860.

A fieri facias or fi fa  is a writ directed by the Court to a Sheriff to take action. In this case William Townsend has won a judgement forcing Moses Brock and his wife Margaret Calvit along with Moses’ father William Brock to sale a negro girl slave named Rebecca. I really don’t see any reason why William Brock, Moses’ father was named.

After the death of Margaret in 1860, Moses married Eliza E. Boren. Moses died sometime before 1880 and Eliza died in August 1880.

About January 1844 William Brock, age 74, died and a short time later his second wife died leaving a surviving child age about 2 to 2 1/2 years old.

Sarah in the above deed is Sarah Brock daughter of William and his first wife Charlotte. She married Asael/Asahel SIX son of Phillip Six and Charlotte Selser on 22 November 1838 in Hinds County, Mississippi.

Moses Brock is also a son of William and Charlotte Brock and a brother to Sarah Brock Six.

This Deed is the result of action directed by the courts in the settlement of the Estate of William Brock.
