Each week, on Sunday, I will select an Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County and discuss its contents. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Today we will be looking at the following Estate folder: 1

Gertrude Covington Perkins was the fourteenth (14) child of John Henry Perkins and his wife Nancy Jane Davis. John Henry died in 1885 when Gertrude was 8 years old. Her Mother, Nancy died in 1887 when Gertrude was just a mere child of 10.
Gertrude's older sister Laura Virginia Davis Thurman wife of Dr. Benjamin Hill Thurman was named as Guardian of her sister Gertrude Covington Perkins.
At age 17, Gertrude Covington Perkins left home and went to Darlington County with her future husband Clarence C. Medlin and they were married there by Rev. N. L. Swett in 1895.
Gertrude Covington Perkins
The last which I have to chronicle was a runaway match. Mr. Clarence Medlin and Miss Gertrude Perkins of Cheraw left town last night about dark and went to the residence of the Rev. N. L. Swett, in Marlboro, about four miles from town and were married . Some of the family, I Learn, opposed the match, but when two people make up their minds to get married their friends and relatives might just as well stand aside and allow them to go their own way. 2
