It’s Family Time~The Iverson L. Briley Family

Iverson L. Briley son of Iverson H. Briley and Jane Sellers was born about 1825 in Chesterfield, County, South Carolina. His mother, Jane Sellers Briley, passed way before 14 July 1834, the date her father executed his Will. He is first named in the Will of his grandfather Hardy Sellers. Item 7 of Hardy's Will reads:

7.  To the son of my deceased daughter Jane Brily, Iverson L. Brily I give three hundred dollars to bare interest from my death until he arrives to the age of twenty-one years which is to be a full share of my estate both real and personal.

He is also mentioned in an Equity Suit brought by John Evans, the Executor of the Estate of Hardy Sellers in a bill for partition.

[#25] Evans, John Exer. vs. H.H. Sellers & others - Bill for partition & c 1851

Next, we find Iverson L. Briley, age 26, in  Concordia Parish, Louisiana where he lists his occupation as Overseer but no industry is named.  The following year on 9 June 1851, Iverson L. Briley married a young lady named Sarah L. Higdon. Sarah L. Higdon was the daughter of Daniel Higdon and Louisiana Gilbert.

In 1860, Iverson and Sarah are still in Concordia Parish, with a family of three daughters. He still lists his occupation as Overseer and has a personal estate valued at ten thousand dollars. Again no occupational industry is named. The children of Iverson and Sarah are:
  • Mary E. Briley, b. abt 1856
  • Emily L. Briley, abt 1859
  • Clarrisa Briley, abt 1860
Then on 6 Apr. 1870, S. L. Briley married George W. Tier in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana. She and George are enumerated in the 1870 Caldwell Parish Census. County. Finding Sarah remarried in this Census was a good indication that Iverson H. Briley had passed away.

No death date has been located for Iverson H. Briley but we know he died before 6 April 1870.

Sadly, shortly after her marriage to George W. Tier in April 1870, Sarah passed away on 21 August 1871.

The following transcribed probate document records the death of Sarah and names her previous husband, their children, and her mother.
