In the 1939 Election Census there are 7 members in the Jonathan Davis Household. In the 1840 Census The Jno. Davis household contains 5 members. 1 male and 4 females. The male in this household is Jonathan Daniel Davis, Jr. age 20-29 making his birth year to be 1811-1820. The oldest female is age 20-29 make her birth years to be between 1811-1820. the other 3 children are females', 2 under 5 and 1 age 5-9.
Jonathan Daniel Davis, Sr. is believed to have passed away before 1840 most searchers say between 1831 and 1839.
The 1840 census seems to indicate that Jno, Davis and his wife have a family of three daughter. Looking at the 1850 Census we get an entirely different picture of the family.
1850 CENSUS: Chesterfield, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; Roll: M432_851; Image: 365, Page 180B, Line 38, Dwelling 162, Family 1262; Sarah DAVIS, Female, age 55, born in SC; Daniel DAVIS, Male, age 32, born in SC; Elisha DAVIS, Male, age 29, born in SC; Jerusha [Davis] McBRIDE, Female, age 27, born in SC; Jane McBRIDE, Female, age 9, born in SC; Elizabeth McBRIDE, Female, age 7, born in SC; James McBRIDE, Male, age 5, born in SC; Jerusha McBRIDE, Female, age 3, born in SC and Archibald McBRIDE, Male, age 3, born in SC.
We have Jonathan Daniel Davis Sr wife, Sarah, age 55, listed as head of Household, her son Jonathan Daniel Jr. age 32, Son, Elisha, age 29, daughter Jerusha [Davis] McBride, age 27 and 5 McBride grandchildren.
There is no indication or proof that Jonathan Daniel Davis, Jr. was a married man. The 1850 Census shows a female, Sarah in the household whom locally is the Widow of Jonathan Sr. along with three of her children; 2 sons, Jonathan and Elisha and a daughter, Jerusha.
Most online trees has copy Harry Alexander Davis’s Book and indicated that Sarah is a Rivers or Barnes. There is absolutely no proof that Sarah‘s maiden name is Rivers or Barnes. Conversely, there is a newspaper clipping that suggest that Jonathan Daniel Davis wife is Elizabeth Parker, daughter of George Parker.
In 1837, the following notice appeared in the local newspaper,
Transcription:

Mary Parker, Applicant,
VS
Wm. Parker, Jonathan Davis and wife Elizabeth, Jesse Parker, T. Parker, George Parker, Lewis Parker, Elizabeth Parker, Joseph Parker & Phoeba Parker, Defendants
It appearing to my satisfaction that Jesse Parker one of the Defendants, resides without the State, it is therefore ordered, that he appear and object to the division or sale of the Real Estate of George Parker, deceased, on or before the 28th day of March next, or his consent will be entered on record.

This document first proved that the statement that Jonathan died between 1831 and 1839 is only partially right. He definitely died sometime after 23 January 1837.
Secondly, the article refers to Jonathan Davis and his wife Elizabeth. Since this notice has to do with the division or sale of the Real Estate of George Parker, it's evident that Elizabeth Davis, wife of Jonathan, is related and most likely a daughter of the said George Parker. We know this is not Jonathan Daniel, Jr.; in the 1850 Census Daniel, age 32, is listed in his Mother household who is listed as Sarah Davis. My take is that Sarah Davis is Sarah Elizabeth (Parker) Davis. While there is not conclusive evidence, we have a piece of evidence that points in this direction whereas no documentation is available to substantiate a Barnes or Rivers surname.
The demise and life of Jonathan Daniel Davis, Jr. is a complete mystery after his appearance in the 1850 Chesterfield County, South Carolina Census.
If you have any information regarding Jonathan Daniel Davis, Jr., his siblings or his parents I would love to hear from you.
Jonathan Daniel Davis, Jr. is my 1st Cousin 4X removed.
