FAMILY BIBLE-BROCK-SELLERS-JOHNS
My Mom once owned an old Family Bible containing data about the BROCK-SELLERS and JOHNS Family. Over time this Bible has become lost or misplaced but I still have copies of the pages I xeroxed from this Bible about 30 years ago. All pertinent Family History data from the Bible has been transcribed and contained here within.

Amanuensis Monday~Land Deed, Mary T. Davis to C. D. Boan, 1872

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:

Today’s subject is a Land Deed from Mary T. Davis to C. D. Boan, 1872.1

Sometime before 25 May 1866, Christopher Boan (1806-1866) of Chesterfield County passed away leaving an estate containing 194 acres of land.2  His son, Charles David Boan requested and received Letters of Administration from the Courts.

Pvt. Frederick F. Rivers was never married. He served with Company “D”, 6th SC CAV CSA and was captured and taken prisoner at Stoney Creek on 1 Dec 1864.

His War records shows that Frederick took the Oath of Allegiance on 17 June, 1865 while a prisoner at Point Lookout Maryland. He was released that same day. The document shows him as dark complexion, Black Hair, blue eyes, 6 feet and 3/4 inch in height.  His place of residence is listed as Chesterfield District, SC.

No record exist that show why Frederick died so young but I suspect it was related to injuries or diseases acquired during the Civil War.

Pvt. Frederick F. Rivers is buried in the Rivers Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Valentine Brock and Nancy Vandigrift

Finding ancestors that migrated away from the home county or home state is always a challenge and very rewarding when found. I can remember it like yesterday when I found the family of Valentine Brock and his wife Elizabeth Lundy living in Henry County, Georgia.

Valentine b. bef 1775 in the Cheraw District and his wife Elizabeth Lundy, b. 3 Feb. 1780 were married in 1807 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Valentine and Elizabeth had 5 children:
  • James Lundy Brock, b. 8 Sept 1808
  • Mary Ann Brock, b.20 Feb. 1810
  • Sarah Elizabeth Brock, b. 26 Jan. 1812
  • Eliza P. Brock, b. 16 Nov. 1813
  • Valentine Brock, b. 2 Feb 1815
All the children were born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

On 21 July 1836, the youngest son, Valentine married Nancy W. Vandigrift daughter of John Vandigrift and Margaret Crockett. Young Valentine’s father had passed away sometime before 1830. The marriage was recorded in Henry County Marriages Book 1822-1933 and General indexes to marriages 1821-1939, page 171.

Samuel Joseph Sellers was the son of Son of John M. Sellers & Jerusha Ann Smith Sellers. Based on his age as reported in the 1880 census, age 43, he was born in 1837. Samuel J. and Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Hurst were married about 1857. This date is calculated based on the birth of their first known child, a daughter born in February 1858.

Samuel and Betty had 12 known children between 1858 and 1883. On 22 February 1886, Samuel Joseph Sellers wrote and signed his Last Will and Testament. His FindAGrave memorial (#30435663) shows his death date as unknown.

I found one document that shows his death date to be July 1887. This document, a Civil War Tombstone request, was completed 45 years after his reported death date. It may or may not be factual. I wrote about this request here:

It's Family Time
The Family Bible shows that Sarah Frances "Sallie" Purvis was born on 16 June 1892 in Morven, Anson, North Carolina. Her tombstone and death certificate are both in conflict with this data. The June 1892 date does match the 1900 Census.

Amanuensis Monday~Probate of the James Smith Estate, 1890

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is Probate of the Estate of James Smith, 1890.1

James Smith was born 4 March 1826, a son of Duncan Smith. He married Catherine McLaurin about 1855/56 and they had 6 children; 3 sons and 3 daughters. James died on 23 January 1890. His wife died approximately 3 years later in September 1893.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #285–John Ellis

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Today we will be looking at the following Estate folders:
Folder #285

This estate folder begins at image #140 and ends with image #172. (images 140-172)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19383-35028-53?cc=1911928

Nowhere within the Estate folder of John Ellis is there a document that shows his date of death; but his tombstone in the Peniel Cemetery records his death date as 15 November 1871. John had lost his entire family by the time of his death. His two children, William Archibald and Sarah Ann had passed away in 1864. Then in June of 1867, his wife Eliza passed away.
The loss in his entire family resulted in his estate being divided between his siblings and surviving nieces and nephews.
At the time of John’s death he held a large estate consisting of both real and personal which included 400 acres of land on Bear Creek. Court was held on the 27th day of December 1872 to determine the disposition of said land.

This document from his estate shows those surviving heirs at law.
