Amanuensis Monday~The Lands of Sarah (Morris) Brock

In early March 1865, the military forces of Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, lead by Calvary General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick entered the county of Chesterfield. They established camp at Cheraw while the Union soldiers made raids on local farms in Chesterfield County and nearby Anson County, North Carolina. On 12 March the soldier visited the farm of Hezekiah “Hugh”  and Sarah “Sallie” Brock. Hezekiah and Sallie had 6 sons ranging in age from  a 1 year old to 13. Hezekiah was taken prisoner and marched to Wilmington, North Carolina.

Sallie and the boys never saw her husband and the boys their father ever again. He died on 12 June 1865 in Point Lookout, Maryland. The Civil War had ended on 9 April 1865.

All six of these boys grew up to be fine young men. Sallie never remarried and raised these boys alone. I'm certain she had help from the Brock and Morris families.

Today we will be looking at a land deed that is being executed in October 1902. Five of these brothers are selling 39 1/2 acres of land to their younger brother. This 39 1/2 acres was originally purchased by their Mother, Sarah (Morris) Brock from Jas. O. Edwards by Deed bearing date of December the 19th 1876. Sarah Brock had passed away on 21 October 1902 and the boys had petitioned the Courts for sale of the land.
