Petition to Care for Two Minor Children as Indentured Servants

Sarah (Higdon) Briley's husband,  Iverson L. Briley, passed away sometime before April 1870 leaving her with 3 young daughters ranging in age from 10 to fourteen. She then married  George Washington Tier on  6 April 1870. Prior to that marriage, she accepted in April 1867,  2 young minor orphans as indentured servants. This action took place through the Louisiana Freedmen's Bureau and was most likely done to bring in additional income for the family.

Four years into this indentured servants venture, Sarah (Higdon) (Briley) Tier passed away on 21 August 1871 leaving her 3 daughters and two servants as orphans. Thus began a new saga between the grandmother and the step-dad over the biological children. A saga, we will visit another day.
