Martha Ellen Deese is the daughter of Zachariah Deese and Clara W. Gathings. She was the youngest of five children with two brothers and two sisters.
Martha lost her Mother in Jul 1909 and in the 1920 Census her Father, two brothers and herself were found in the household of her sister Lillie and husband Daniel Wright.
On 24 December 1924 Martha Deese and Carl Wilburn Atkinson were married at the residence of John Brooks, Wadesboro, North Carolina.
