It’s Family Time~The James Deese Family

James Deese, son of Stephen Deese and his wife Sarah, was born about 1795; the oldest of five children borne to this union. [NOTE: There are researchers who claimed that Sarah, wife of Stephen Deese, was Sarah Alice Huneycutt. No one in the past 40+ years has provided a single document that supports this statement.]

At age 29, James married Alice Bethea. No record of this marriage has been found. James and Alice had three children and based on the birth of their first born were together as a married couple for over 56 years. The NC death certificate of Robert Clinton Deese named Alice Bethea as his Mother.

James was a farmer. He and Alice can be found in the 1850-1880 Census for Anson (1850) and Union (1860-1880) counties in North Carolina.

James Deese and Alice Bethea had the following children:

i. Mary Elizabeth Deese, born 1825; alive in 1880, date and place of death unknown.
ii. Malinda Belinda Deese, born 1828; married Wilson Henry; died aft 25 June 1900. Melinda, age 74, is with her son, Thomas F. Deese in the 1900 Census for Anson County, North Carolina.
iii. Robert Clinton Deese, born 4 Jul 1832; married Julia Best, 22 Jul 1859; died 25 Jun 1916 in Lumberton, Robeson, North Carolina.

James Deese and Alice Deese are both enumerated with their grandson John D. Deese in the 1880 Union County census. This is the last record found for this couple. No Death Certificate, Obituary or tombstone has been found for either James or Alice Deese.
