His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.
Today’s subject is the Sale of 153 Tract of Land by Jackson Heirs to John Edwards, 1844.1
The 5th line above the signatures on this deed reads:
“we the said heirs at law of William P. Jackson do far ourselves & our heirs…”
Parties named within the land deed are:
- Mary (Blakeney) Jackson, wife of Henry Andrew Jackson
- Alfred M. Lowry husband of Henrietta Jackson
- Alex May husband of Susanna Jackson
- Stephen Jackson son of H. A. and Mary Jackson
- Benjamin A. Jackson son of H. A. and Mary Jackson
The parents of both William P. Jackson and Henry Alexander Jackson are unknown. Most on-line trees have both as sons of Stephen Jackson and Nancy Cook but I believe this is pure conjecture and haven’t been proven to the Genealogical Proof Standard.
Alfred M. Lowry & Others to John Edwards
This Indenture made this 18th of October 1844 between the heirs at law of William P. Jackson late of Anson County State of North Carolina of the one part and John G. Edwards of said State & County of the other part. Witnesseth that the said heirs at law Mary Jackson, A. M. Lowry, Alex May, Stephen Jackson & Benjamin A. Jackson for & in consideration of the sum of Twelve hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said Edwards the receipt & full payment whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given granted bargain & Sold and by these presents do give grant bargain & sell unto the said Edwards a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in the County of Anson on Thompson Creek. Beginning at a stake in the state line & runs No. 19 Wt. 40 chains & 20 links to 2 pines & post oak pointers thence along a line of marked trees No. 79 Wt. 20 chains & 20 links to a pine stump 3 pines pointer then So. 32 Wt. 13 chains & 90 links to a stake one red oak & dogwood pointer then West 15 chains to a corner about thirty links below the mine hole thence So. 16 chains & fifty links crofsing Thompson Creek to a stake on the bank of said creek thence Et. 8 chains & 30 links to a dead pine corner then So. 9 Et. 16 chains to a stake one red oak post oak and a parcel of saplings pointers and to be in the State line thence with said line No. 88 ½ degrees East 42 chains crofsing said creek to the beginning containing one hundred & fifty three acres more or lefs. To have and to hold said tract or parcel of land with all the appurtenances to him the said John G. Edwards his heirs & assigns forever and we the said heirs at law of William P. Jackson do far ourselves & our heirs covenant & agree with the said John G. Edwards his heirs & assigns to warrant & forever defend the title of the said tract of land to the said John G. Edwards against the lawfully claims of all persons whatsoever. In witness whereof we the said Mary Jackson A. M. Lowry Alex May Stephen Jackson & Benjamin Jackson have here unto set our hand & Seals this day & year above written. Signed sealed & delivered in presence of
