Obituary Sunday~James C. Copeland

In 1860, James C. Copeland was a young lad, age 9, living in Chesterfield County, South Carolina with his parents Thomas F. Copeland and Sarah Ellen White. James had two brothers and two sisters -  Joseph, Lafate, Ellen and Sarah.

1860 Copeland

Family folklore reports that Thomas F. Copeland, Sarah Ellen and two of the five children died of “pestulence”1 on a steamboat near Louisville, Kentucky in 1864.  This query was posted on-line in August 2003.2

Copeland 2

I have been unable to find Thomas, Sarah Ellen (wife); Ellen (daughter) and Lafate Copeland after the 1860 Census and it’s certain something happen to them. However, this extraction of James C. Copeland obituary shows that Joseph, James , Sarah and Silas T. [born after Census] lived to adulthood.

The fate of Thomas F. Copeland (Father); Sarah Ellen White Copeland (Mother); Lafate (son) and Ellen (Daughter) Copeland is unknown; though I can only account for the loss of two children, not three.

We know that Silas T. Copeland was born in 1862; it’s possible there is another child that I am unaware of, born after the Census enumeration. Until he was, of age, he was in an Orphanage.

Silas's obituary states that he came to Evansville, Indiana fifty-three years ago. That would be in 1869 and James would have been 17 years old.

Never Mind the Facts, This is my Family Tree

Isaac Rivers

This is a family tree on Ancestry for which I have deliberately hidden the owner name to avoid embarrassment.

I have pointed out such errors in the past without any resolution so I gave up. I have not contacted the owner of this tree.

I know these lines, they are my family lines, and I have researched them for 37 plus years. Research in Chesterfield County is not easy; but, this owner has deliberately disregarded the original source documents that he/she reference as the source of their data. Thus, the name is this blog reflect those actions.

The first problem here is that Siddy/Siddie Boatwright Rivers, age 65 married Frederick Rivers, age 72, and the 1850 Census cited clearly shows that Frederick is the head of household.

So, why is Isaac Rivers listed as the Husband of Siddie Boatwright Rivers in their tree?

Siddie did marry Frederick Rivers abt 1804. Frederick was born on 3 November 1789 so the birth date listed for Isaac in the tree is the correct birth date for Siddie husband but the husband name is wrong.

Next, If Siddy Boatwright Rivers had a first name it most likely was Sarah and her 1st born daughter was named for her. Frederick and Siddie had a daughter named Sarah that was also called Siddie. The only Laura Boatwright in Chesterfield County was born in 1857.

The tree shows that Isaac and Laura son Frederick was born in 1805. The 1850 census shows that Frederick was age 22 or about 1828.  Frederick and Siddie son Frederick was born in 1828.

Fredrick Rivers, the husband of Siddie Boatwright did die on 31 May 1860. See Find A Grave Memorial# 47259651.

There is no Isaac Rivers married to a Laura in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Citing a Frederick Rivers census for a source of data for an Isaac Rivers doesn't make sense.

1850 Census

A portion of my research on Frederick and Siddie:

Frederick F. Rivers was born on 3 Nov 1779 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.1 2 He died on 31 May 1860 at the age of 80 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was buried in the Rivers Cemetery in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. A Memorial has been created for Frederick at www.findagrave.com. 3

Frederick F. Rivers and Siddie Boatwright were married about 1804 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.4 5 Siddie Boatwright, daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Sarah Lundy, was born in Jan 1786 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died on 3 Jul 1861 at the age of 75 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was buried in the Rivers Cemetery in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Frederick F. Rivers and Siddie Boatwright had the following children:

1. William M. "Billy" Rivers, born 1805, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
2. Sarah "Siddie" Rivers was born in 1808 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
3. David T. Rivers, born 10 Jun 1810, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
4. Lewis Rivers, born 6 Nov 1811, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
5. Eliza Rivers, born abt 1815, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
6. Frederick F. Rivers was born in 1828 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
7. Calvin Rivers, born 9 Jan 1831, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

In closing, I just don't understand what motivates someone to put together such a tree while ignoring the facts in front of them.

Amanuensis Monday~William A. Purvis, 1877, Crop and Chattel Lien

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s posting is a Crop and Chattel Mortgage/Lien between  my 2nd Great Grandfather, William A. Purvis and Marshall & Richardson of Anson County, North Carolina. The mortgage/lien is dated 12 March 1877.

In the mortgage, William A. Purvis is borrowing $100 dollar with a limit of $200.00 to buy supplies for crop production in 1877.

Census Sunday~Jesse Freeman, 1850, Chesterfield County, SC

Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis were married about 1826. Together they had 10 or 11 children; nine children are listed in the 1850 Chesterfield County Census.

Sarah Jane Davis Freeman is my 3rd great grand aunt. She and her husband Jesse along with the children are listed here in the 1850 Census.1

1850UnitedStatesFederalCensusForJesseFreeman
1850, Ann E. Freeman,

The family unit consisted of the following children plus two daughters not shown – Sarah Ann and Mary Ann, both of whom were married in 1850 and out of the household.

1850 Census - Jesse Freeman

Note: Sarah Ann Freeman, Jesse and Sarah Jane’s daughter married John D. Odom. Her tombstone at Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery shows a birth date of 14 July 1827, Thus, the Sarah A. Freeman, age 3, above is most likely a granddaughter of Jesse Freeman, Sr.

It is reported that Jesse Freeman, age 12 above, enlisted into the Civil War and died during the War. As of today, this has not been proven. There are many trees on-line, some with dates for his death. The only problem is that there is NO SOURCE. Some even show that he served in the 21st SCV; again no proof.
Sarah Jane Freeman died sometime after 1870; Jesse Freeman died in July 1881. After, Sarah Jane’s death, Jesse remarried to a Mary LNU. .

When Jesse Freeman died; his daughters Mary Ann Freeman Wadsworth and her husband, Louis H. Wadsworth, Effie Freeman Purvis and her husband, Stephen D. Purvis filed a Bill of Complaint against the surviving heirs. 2

The said Jessie Freeman directed all property to be sold. He failed to appoint an Executor or Executrix. Louis H. Wadsworth and Stephen D. Purvis have been sworn and received their Letters of Administration. The estate, 400 acres of land, was sold and distributed between the heirs.

Widow Places Claim Against Estate

My 3rd Great Granduncle, Samuel W. Brock, Sr. and his wife Martha had a large family of nine (9) children, seven (7) sons and two (2) daughters.

At the start of the Civil War, six of these boys were of age to be conscripted into the war; only James Paul, born in 1845, their youngest child, was under the age of induction.

Of the six boys eligible, I have records that five served and among those five (5) only one survived the War. Those 5 were:

  • Joel Washington Brock, b. 1829; d. 1 March 1865 1
  • Samuel W. Brock, Jr., b. 1830; d. 30 Nov 1864 2
  • Eli Brock, b. Feb 1836; d. 1905 3
  • Calvin Brock, b. 22 Feb 1832; d. 9 Feb. 1865 4
  • Thomas Brock, b. 1839; d. 17 Oct 1863 5

Among the five brothers listed above only Eli Brock survived the War and returned home. Four of the brothers were single but Samuel was presumed to be married to Ann and had a sons, Thomas C. Brock, b. October 1860 and  Samuel W. Brock, III, born In March 1863.

I say presumed because marriage licenses for this time period are non-existent, the 1860 census was enumerated on June 26, 1860, at which time Samuel W. Brock was living with his parents. Yet, his first child, Thomas C. Brock, was born in October 1860.

1860 Chesterfield Census
1860 Census, Chesterfield Co., SC

On May 11, 1864, Samuel W. Brock, Jr. was conscripted into the War. He died of disease on 30 Nov 1864 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Back home in Chesterfield County, SC his estate (#191) was being probated through the Courts. Within the probate file, this document was found.6

The document is quite interesting, in that, Ann/Anna Brock is billing her late husband’s estate for the care of their children from his death in November 1864 till 1872 or eighty-eight months of care. That’s 7 years and 4 months.

Very little is known about Ann and her last name has eluded this researcher. In 1860, Samuel W. Brock, Jr. was unmarried living at home with his parents.7 Then, we have the document above from his Civil War Record. Next we find Anna, Thomas and Samuel in the 1880 Census.8

1880 CENSUS: Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina, Source: FHL Film 1255225, National Archives Film T9-1225,  Enumeration District: 002; Page 287B, Line 29, Dwelling 533, Family 537; Anna BROCK, age 40, b. NC; Thomas BROCK, Son, age 18, b. SC; Samuel BROCK, Son, age 15, b. SC and Robert PRESLAR, Nephew, age 6, b. SC.

In 1900, we find no record of Ann/Anna ; but, Thomas and Samuel were found in the Census.9

1900 CENSUS: Cheraw, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; Roll: 1523;  Enumeration District: 0017; FHL microfilm: 1241523; Page: 7A/26(stamped); Line 8, Dwelling 110, Family 110; Samuel W. BROCK, age 37, Single, born March 1863 and his brother Thomas C. BROCK, age 39, Single, born Oct. 1860.

No death certificate, tombstone or obituary has been found for Ann/Anna, Thomas and Samuel. Only one clue exist to her identity, the presence of Robert Preslar, nephew, in the 1880 Census. So far this has been a “dead end”. No record of Robert Preslar after 1880 has been found.

I’m completely confused as to why Ann/Anna presented a claim against her Husband’s estate for care of their children.

I would love to hear your comments and suggestions concerning this posting.
