It’s Family Time~The William Alfred Rivers Family

William Alfred Rivers was born in 1828, a son of  William Rivers and his wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Rivers.  He was a farmer.
  
In June 1851, William Alfred married Mary A. Brock, age 22, daughter of Squire H. Brock and his wife Rachel Parker.


To this union was born a son Squire James Rivers on 13 March 1851. Sadly, Mary A Brock Rivers did not survive the birth of her child thus leaving William Alfred a widow with a baby to raise. Squire H and Rachel played a major role in raising this child.

Squire James Rivers, born 13 Mar 1852, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Emily Ellen White, 18 Apr 1876, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 21 Nov 1917, Adrain, Emanuel County, Georgia.

After the death of Mary A. Brock Rivers, William Alfred, in 1853, married  Eliza Ann Turnage, daughter of William Turnage and Lavina Thompson.

By the start of the Civil War in January 1861 William Alfred and Eliza  Ann had four children ranging in age from 6 years to the baby born in Feb 1860.

William Alfred Rivers served in C.S.A. War -  PSS - Palmetto's Sharp Shooters, and Co. B, 26th S.C. Infantry Rgmt. He died on 17 Aug 1863 at the age of 35 in Petersburg, Dinwiddie County' Virginia.

His estate was probated on 29 Oct 1866, Probate record #241, in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States. Wife Eliza Ann Rivers appointed administratrix of the estate.

Rivers late of the District and State aforesaid, lately died intestate, having whilst he lived and at the time of his death divers goods and effect – Your petitioner, therefore, prays that letters of Administration of all and singular the said goods and effects be granted to her according to law.

William Alfred Rivers and Eliza Ann Turnage had the following children:

        i.    Emily Levinia Rivers, born 12 Apr 1854, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Caleb Coker, 1872; died 25 Nov 1936, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
         ii.    Annie Elizabeth Rivers, born 21 May 1856, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Thomas James McDonald, abt 1876; died 26 Aug 1889, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
         iii.    Nancy J. "Amanda" Rivers, born abt 1858, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married John P. Smith, abt 1875; died aft 1920.
         iv.    William Turnage "Billie" Rivers, born 15 Feb 1860, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Henrietta O. Hammond, 5 Oct 1898, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 23 Oct 1933, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
         v.    Sarah Frances Rivers, born 4 Nov 1862, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married George Washington Carnes Sr., abt 1886, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 26 Dec 1931, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.


After the death of her husband in August 1863, Eliza Ann remained
a widow until her death on 5 July 1910. Eliza is buried at Mt. Olivet
Methodist Church in Chesterfield County.


William Alfred Rivers is my 3rd Great Grand Uncle.

Mary A. Brock is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.
